Casseroles are one of the very best ways of eating healthily and getting a good amount of vegetables. This is because you can include lots of different vegetables very easily and so you can easily go over the recommended 5 a day and they are also very easy to make and tasty and so they are a great meal to cook.
| They may not look great but they are very good for you; they retain
lots of the goodness from the vegetables because it is all cooked together
with no waste (when vegetables are boiled allot of the goodness goes
into the water which is why lots of people use this water for the gravy).
There are lots of recipes available for casseroles and we have lots on
this site listed below, the great thing is though that you can swap and
change the ingredients to a certain extent and so if you do not like
one you can usually omit it and add another one or even add extra ones
for more goodness! Another great thing about casseroles is that they are cooked for a good amount of time and so the vegetables reduce and their flavours become less milder as the dish as a whole combines the flavours from all of the ingredients and so the vegetables do not taste as strong as they would on their own. So this means they are allot easier to eat if you are not a huge fan of vegetables and so they are a great way of getting kids to eat more vegetables; just use ones that they do not mind and you can often include others as you cannot often even taste them but you will have to test this as you go. |
