Once you have a healthy diet the other aspect of losing weight and becoming fit is the exercise that you do on a weekly basis. It is a simple case of if you burn more calories that you consume then you will lose weight and the best way to burn calories is to exercise on a regular basis.
| The amount of exercise that you do will depend on your current fitness and the amount of time that you have but you should do as much as you can as the more exercise you do the more calories you will burn. If you have done very little exercise recently then you will find it difficult and it will not be very pleasant but as your fitness improves you will find it much easier and be very happy in a few months when you start to see the benefits. The suggested amount of exercise is officially 30 minutes per day five times per week but we do not think that that is enough if you are looking to lose weight and become fit and is more of a bare minimum. There are lots of ways that you can get some good exercise though and we will run through them on this page. | ![]() |

General Exercise
The best way to increase your exercise is just to generally be more active
such as walking instead of driving. You can easily add 30 minutes of
exercise per day by just walking when you would have otherwise driven
or been driven and if you do this every day you will really notice
an improvement in your health and fitness. So if you do short drives
to the shops, work or school then walk instead and just this can get
you over the official recommended 30 minutes per day. |
Working Out
To burn calories at a more intense level you are going to have to do
some fitness training that is more intense than the general exercise
and so you should only do this when you have done the general exercise
for a few weeks and you should also start off slowly and build up
the amount you do per work out slowly. You should also aim to do
this 4-5 times per week as your body does need a rest from the working
out. |
So we suggest you buy a piece of exercise equipment (or more for some variety and so that more than one person can exercise at the same time) such as an exercise bike, cross trainer, treadmill or rowing machine. They all have different benefits but will all burn calories well and if you use them for 30-60 minutes per day and 5 times per week then along with the general exercise above you will be fighting fit in no time. But remember to start off slowly and so for the first few just do a small amount of exercise and if you feel exhausted then stop; don't worry though because your fitness will slowly improve enabling you to do more exercise over time. Weight LiftingA great way to build muscle is to use weight lifting equipment and this is great because muscle burns allot of calories all of the time and so it can really add to your weight loss (well actually it does not because muscle is allot heavier than fat and so you will actually gain weight but you will lose fat which is what is important!). Weight lifting is an intensive exercise and so again make sure you start slowly with light weights and build up over time, also make sure that you lift the weights in a slow and controlled manner as this is the most effective technique. It is also important to give yourself a good amount of rest as the muscles need a good amount of time to recover and so you should not do any weight lifting the day after you have done some. Multi gyms, weight lifting benches and dumbbells are all excellent weight lifting equipment and will have your muscles bulging in no time! Swimming
One of the most effective exercises that you can do is swimming and so
doing this a few times a week is an excellent addition to your weekly
exercise. Swimming exercises every part of your body and so for a total
body work out it cannot be beaten, just don't drive there as that extra
walking will be of great benefit too! |
